My Thoughts:

The Miami Dolphins unraveled last year despite some promising signings and encouraging signs heading into the season. They tumbled down to 6-10, their seventh straight season with a losing record and everyone knew changes had to be made. Well many experts did not like their offseason moves I simply applaud them for doing something and not standing pat. First of all, offensive guru, Adam Gase was brought in to be Head Coach and he should immediately help an offense with lots of skill but was short on success. For the short term, Mario Williams, former 1st overall defensive end could elevate the play of the defense if he is focus and determined. He was a beast for Buffalo in 2014 but his play slip greatly last year. Olivier Vernon was a good football player but he was to be paid as an elite football player this year and I just do not see him at that level. It hurt to lose him but sometimes the money you don't spend is better than the money you do spend and I see that here. In fact, a Mario Williams, Cam Wake and Andre Branch (free agent from Jacksonville) combination may do better than many think. They were able to find a possible starting safety as well in free agent Isa Abdul-Quddus who has 16 career starts.

The draft started off perfect for the Dolphins who had star offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil fall into their lap due to a social media photo leak that caused him to plummet down the first round. He will likely start at left guard and his insertion into the starting lineup likely makes the Dolphins offensive line one of the best in the league. Then the team added a terrific rookie cornerback in Xavien Howard from Baylor who was one of my favorite corners in the entire draft. The next pick saw the Dolphins draft the explosive, dynamic Kenyan Drake who hid behind a Heisman winner at Alabama but could be a legitimate NFL star if he can lose the roadrunner approach to running back and develop some patience. He will compete for the starting job. So far so good in the draft...

Then the draft got weird. The Dolphins traded picks to move up in the draft to take a receiver, Leonte Carroo of Rutgers. Now I happen to really like this receiver who is big, physical and reminds of Anquan Boldin. The Dolphins however had two stud, young receivers already on roster in Jarvis Landry and DeVante Parker. So be in though as this young trio looks terrific. Then they went on to take two more receivers in the draft which made little sense to me. Add to that a rookie quarterback project and a marginal defensive back prospect and the draft fizzled out after a strong start.

The Dolphins had a good offseason but failed to address the mediocre linebacker core and that could cost them. There were some bold moves and some head scratchers but they did make big changes which a 6-10 team must do to compete. Time will tell if they made the right ones.
