My NFL Draft Top 15

What Changed?

Arizona Cardinals

Veterans Signed:

S Tyvon Branch (Chiefs)
OG Evan Mathis (Broncos)

Veterans Lost:

S Rashad Johnson (Tennessee)
OT Bobby Massie (Bears)
OT Bradley Sowell (Seahawks)
LB Sean Weatherspoon (Falcons)

Draft Picks:

DT Robert Nkemdiche (Ole Miss)
CB Brandon Williams (Texas AM)
OG Evan Boehm (Missouri)
S Marqui Christian (Midwestern State)
OT Cole Toner (Harvard)
CB Harlan Miller (SE Louisiana)

My Thoughts:

The Cardinals lost a player in Rashad Johnson who has started 30 of the past 32 games at either FS or SS for the team. He is a talented, athletic safety whose loss will be felt. Free agent signing Tyvon Branch of the Chiefs will be expected to slot in as a starting strong safety where he has started 68 games in the NFL. I think Johnson is the better safety but Branch is experience and the Cardinals will not lose much here. Sean Weatherspoon was a former starting linebacker in Atlanta and then moved over to the Cardinals where he did next to nothing. The Cardinals will not miss his presence. Bobby Massie started 30 of the past 32 games at right tackle but the Cardinals were willing to let him walk because first round pick D.J. Humphries from the 2015 NFL Draft should be ready to step into starting right tackle. The team lost a second tackle as well in Bradley Sowell but he was purely a depth player for the Cardinals over the last two seasons with zero starts.

Tyvon Branch was mentioned above and the former Chiefs safety should find a starting role in Arizona. Evan Mathis is a solid, veteran offensive guard who should earn the starting nod for the team. Only two veteran free agent pickups but both should help out.

I believe the draft this season only brought 2-3 players capable of helping out this season. Talented first round pick Robert Nkemdiche can impact a game in a significant way if he improves his effort level on the field and his activities off of it. He could emerge as a starter with focus. Brandon Williams will likely contribute as a nickel or dime defensive back in his first season and he has the potential to emerge as a good starter at the next level. I like Evan Boehm's skill set at guard but he will likely spend the 2016 season as a dependable backup option unless injuries strike.

All in all, the Cardinals come into the 2016 season very similar to the team that made it to the final four last season. They are fast, talented, experienced and capable of a run and didn't lose any asset that should cause them significant panic. A good team will remain so in the desert.
