My NFL Draft Top 15

What Changed?

San Francisco 49ers

Veterans Signed:

G Zane Beadles (Jacksonville)
QB Thaddeus Lewis (San Francisco)

Veterans Lost:

G Alex Boone (Minnesota)

Draft Picks:

DE DeForest Buckner (Oregon)
OG Joshua Garnett (Stanford)
CB Will Redmond (Miss State)
CB Rashard Robinson (LSU)
DT Ronald Blair (Appalachian State)
OT John Theus (Georgia)
OT Fahn Cooper (Mississippi)
QB Jeff Driskel (Louisana Tech)
RB Kelvin Taylor (Florida)
WR Aaron Burbridge (Michigan State)
CB Prince Charles Iworah (Western Kentucky)

My Thoughts:

The San Francisco 49ers had an extremely quiet off season in regards to free agency, securing only a couple of players while losing very little. Zane Beadles will compete for a starting guard position while quarterback Thaddeus Lewis is likely only a depth player. The 49ers lost Alex Boone to the Vikings and he is a better lineman than the coming in Beadles.

The 49ers had a good draft, but not great which is too bad considering all the picks they had. DeForest Buckner is a tall, athletic and disruptive defensive end that will make tons of plays but can be a liability when the run is directly at him. Joshua Garnett will be a good run blocking starting guard at the NFL level but I think trading up to get him was pretty foolish due to the question marks in regards to his pass protection. Rashard Robinson and Will Redmond will offer up at least depth in the secondary and both have enough talent to push for playing time. Ronald Blair has a quick burst and is equally able to produce in the run and passing games but needs to get stronger at the point of attack and prove he can elevate against better talent. Both John Theus and Fahn Cooper will provide depth at offensive tackle. I think Kelvin Taylor is potentially a hidden gem at running back as the offensive talent around him in Florida was pedestrian and Jeff Driskel has potential down the road. Even late round receiver pick Aaron Burbridge could climb up to WR3/WR4 with a good camp.

All in all, I think the draft helped the 49ers make some positive progression this year but nowhere enough to really compete against a strong NFC WEST division. Too many questions still to be answered in San Francisco but it was a step in the right direction.
