PF Daily: Fantasy Football Tutorial Series: Intermediate

Deciding who to start each week

Back to Tutorial Series Index page

So the season has arrived, your roster is stacked, you are feeling good and then you go to pick your starters and realize you do not know who to plug in as your starters. That is not an uncommon problem, especially as the year goes on, injuries happen and starting positions become more unclear. However, below are a few tips that when followed make the process much easier.

START YOUR STUDS:

The first tip is also the easiest one to follow. If you have top-tier talents on your roster such as...

* WR Calvin Johnson
* WR Antonio Brown
* TE Jimmy Graham
* TE Rob Gronkowski
* RB LeSean McCoy
* RB Marshawn Lynch
* QB Aaron Rodgers
* Many others

simply plug them into your starting lineup every week and do not worry about matchups. You can over-think yourself into a box sometimes so make the easy decisions simple by not second guessing yourself.

COMPARE THE MATCHUPS

When two players look very close in possible production, break down the matchups and see what emerges in the favor of one or the other. Look at past history against team, latest trends, opponent's yards given up per game, really anything that gives you insight into which player is the better pick. Things to compare include:

* Past success against team
* Trending up or down
* Is the player sharing touches or time
* Weather conditions - potentially a big one
* Injury concerns
* Anything else you can think of

Looking at items like those listed will often make it clear which player is more likely to put up good fantasy numbers. There is no guarantee in fantasy football so you simply want to make the best educated decision you can make.

KNOW YOUR DEADLINES

This is a simple one that often can cause owners fits. Owners often wait until the last second to determine if a player who has been hurt will play on the weekend. They are so busy watching for news that they forget to get the lineup in before the deadline. This is a frequent concern due to Thursday Night Football so make sure to get that lineup in at least a few hours before the deadline to cover in case of power failures or other issues.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SUCCESS

When in doubt, please stop by to see my thoughts on the upcoming week. I do not guarantee I will have every player correct as that is impossible without a time machine. However I do promise I will work hard and look at all possible angles while putting together my game pages and cheat sheets for the week. If you are having a tough time deciding on 'Who to Start' each week, swing on by and get a second opinion here.
